I’m Brenda Colyer, an ADAPT-Certified Health Coach, sports nutritionist, and personal trainer.

Have you ever been caught in the revolving door of doctors and medications? Are you taking 1 medication to manage the side effects of another medication? Have you ever said something like this:

“I have always had this health problem. I’m used to it.”

“I’ve been dealing with this since I was a kid.”

“It’s genetic. It runs in my family.”

“It’s a skin rash. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with my digestive health.”

“I have an iron stomach. I can eat anything without getting sick.” (Refer to the skin rash comment above…..)

“I don’t know how this has happened. It just came from no where.”

“I’m just getting older.”

“It’s just menopause. There is nothing I can do about it.”

“It’s just hormones.”

“It’s so weird! I’ve never had this allergy before!”

“I must not need much sleep, because I just can’t sleep longer than 4-5 hours.”

“I am sick and tired of being sick and tired!”

In functional medicine, acknowledging disease is part of the practice, but getting to the root cause and addressing it is where the “aha” moments can happen and your road to better health begins. What if getting older doesn’t have to mean that your hormones are out of whack, your joints ache, you lose muscle mass and you pack on pounds? What if a disease runs in your family but if you change your lifestyle (which also runs in your family!) it could make the difference between experiencing a full-blown disease or perfect health? What if you have been dealing with a health condition for years but knowing what causes the outbreak could keep you in remission and symptom-free? What if you learned more about the things that interrupt your ability to sleep well and you finally get the much-needed sleep you didn’t even know you needed because you are so used to feeling how you feel on little sleep? The “what if’s” are endless, and so are the possibilities for better health!

What if we sorted out all these what if’s?

  

Modern medicine is irreplaceable when it comes to infectious disease, trauma, and acute care, but functional medicine has a very important place in our healthcare when it comes to chronic disease. Your body is self-healing and self-regulating and often the symptoms that you are treating with medications are the result of an underlying issue that if addressed, could free you from the trap of chronic illness. Of course there are many instances where medication is not only justified but life-saving, but what is your most effective option with the least amount of meds, therefore side effects? Your body is a system of systems. You do not have individual body parts that work in isolation from other body parts, so why would you treat them as such?

You are the expert regarding your health.

When you know better, you can do better.  

Due to lack of time and resources, doctors cannot always follow through with the recommendations that they offer their patients.  That’s where I come in.  I can help you help yourself.

As a health coach, I can guide you to living the life you desire that consists of optimal health and wellness.  I want to help you avoid or make your way out of the sick care system. Whether you have been given recommendations from your doctor or you simply have personal health goals or challenges that you would like to address, I can help you with the process by utilizing strategies that will help you help yourself by using your strengths and actions that keep you motivated and accountable.

Having a growth mindset and maintaining an open mind will keep you striving toward better health, knowing that there is no finish line.  It is a lifestyle of discovering ways to enjoy the journey and appreciate every small win along the way.

Sometimes the answer is to remove obstacles, rather than to add more systems. Most of the time, the answer can be found when we align with nature.

Show up everyday with set intentions and awareness.  Little by little, a little becomes a lot.
